Getting involved in your child's public school experience.

As parents we all know how important it is for us to get involved in our children's educational process.  It let's a child know how much they mean to their parents and it sets a tone that education is a priority to the family.

We have asked several public school teachers what they think parents can do to be more involved in the education of children.  These are some key ideas.

   1.  Make sure when your child misses school that you get the necessary work for them to complete from their teacher.  This will help them stay on track and feel like part of the school day even if they were not in attendance.

   2.  Learn the school or class rules and help your child understand these.  It is helpful to make them a part of your daily life at home as well.  This will provide continuity in your child's life.

   3.  Get a school calendar and be aware of certain dates such as parent teach conferences, assemblies, field trips, etc.  This will help you keep on track as well as let you know what to talk with your children about to help them prepare for certain events and let them know that you care.

   4.  Always make sure that your child is well fed, properly dressed and clean.  This will help your child's learning experience as well as social experience at school.

   5.  Teach your children that attendance is key.

   6.  Volunteer in the classroom as much as possible.  Our teachers need as much help as possible.  As well as helping out you will know more about your child's social and academic life.  This will help you address problems at home.

   7.  Help your child with their homework, let them know that it is important to you that it is done well.

   8.  Always keep reading to your children, even when they can read for themselves we always need to read.  This provides a great time together and individual attention.
